Can I Add a Battery to My Existing Solar Panels?

Last updated October 2026

If you already have solar panels, adding a battery lets you keep more of the electricity they produce instead of exporting it. Most existing systems can take a battery, but the right approach depends on your inverter, your wiring and the age of your installation. This guide explains the options.

Can a battery be added to any solar system?

In most cases, yes. Almost any working solar system can have a battery added, either by connecting it alongside your current inverter or by replacing the inverter with a hybrid model. A survey confirms which option suits your setup, and whether any electrical upgrades are needed first.

Older systems sometimes have an inverter nearing the end of its life. If so, replacing it with a hybrid inverter at the same time as adding a battery can make sense, as it avoids two separate jobs.

What is the difference between AC-coupled and DC-coupled batteries?

An AC-coupled battery has its own inverter and connects to your home’s electrics alongside the existing solar inverter, so the panels are left untouched. A DC-coupled battery connects through a hybrid inverter that handles both panels and battery. AC coupling is usually simplest when adding to existing solar.

DC coupling can be slightly more efficient because energy is converted fewer times, but it normally means replacing your inverter. Your installer will explain the trade-off for your particular system.

Will adding a battery affect my export payments?

It can, depending on your arrangements. Older Feed-in Tariff agreements and newer Smart Export Guarantee tariffs have different rules, and some export payments are based on estimates rather than meter readings. Check your agreement before installing, and tell your installer which scheme you are on.

Storing more of your solar for your own use generally means exporting less. Whether that works in your favour depends on your export rate compared with the price you pay for electricity from the grid.

Does my network operator need to know?

Yes. Adding a battery changes how much electricity your home could export, so your installer must notify or apply to your local network operator. In Scotland that is SSEN in the north or SP Energy Networks in central and southern areas. Larger combined systems may need approval first.

This is normally handled by your installer as part of the job, which is one reason to use an installer familiar with Scottish network requirements.

Does adding a battery to existing solar qualify for 0% VAT?

Yes. Retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system in Great Britain currently qualifies for 0% VAT, scheduled until 31 March 2027. The relief is applied on your installer’s invoice, so there is nothing to claim. Check that your quote shows VAT at 0% on the battery and its installation.

We install through MCS-certified partners, who can confirm what is eligible as part of your written quote.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace my solar panels?

No. The panels themselves are not changed when adding a battery. Depending on the approach, your existing inverter either stays in place or is replaced with a hybrid inverter.

How long does it take to add a battery?

Most retrofit installations are completed in a single day once the survey is done and equipment is available. More complex jobs, such as consumer unit upgrades, can take longer.

Will my solar warranty be affected?

Adding a battery does not normally affect your panel warranty, but changes to the inverter or wiring may affect warranties on those parts. Ask your installer to check what applies to your system.

Can I still use a time-of-use tariff?

Yes. With solar and a battery, you can store daytime surplus and also top the battery up on a cheaper overnight rate, which is especially useful in Scottish winters when solar output is low.

What information should I have ready?

Useful details include your solar system’s size, the inverter make and model, the installation date, any export agreement, and photos of the inverter and consumer unit.
