Home Battery Storage: Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated October 2026

These are the questions Scottish homeowners most often ask before getting a battery quote. Each answer starts with the short version, followed by more detail. If your question is not covered here, call, WhatsApp or email us and we will be happy to help you work it out.

What does a home battery actually do?

A home battery stores electricity so you can use it later. It can store surplus from solar panels or charge from the grid when electricity is cheaper, then power your home when prices are higher or the sun is not shining. It does not generate any electricity on its own.

Most batteries come with an app that shows how much energy is stored, how much your home is using and where your electricity is coming from at any moment.

Is a home battery safe?

Batteries installed to the manufacturer’s instructions by a competent installer are designed to be safe for domestic use. Many home batteries use lithium iron phosphate chemistry, known for its thermal stability. Your installer will choose a suitable location with the right ventilation, clearances and access for your home.

Batteries include built-in management systems that monitor temperature, voltage and charge, and shut down if anything moves outside safe limits.

How long do home batteries last?

Home batteries are designed to last many years and come with manufacturer warranties, commonly ten years or more. Capacity reduces gradually over time rather than stopping suddenly. Warranty terms differ between brands and often guarantee a minimum remaining capacity, so compare them carefully when choosing a battery.

What happens after I request a quote?

We match you with an MCS-certified installation partner covering your area. They contact you to discuss your home and usage, arrange a survey, and then provide a written, itemised quote. There is no obligation to proceed, and you can ask questions at every stage before deciding.

We install through MCS-certified partners across Scotland, from cities to rural and island communities, subject to survey.

How can I contact you?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need solar panels to get a battery?

No. A battery can charge from the grid on a cheaper time-of-use rate and power your home at peak times. Our guide to battery storage without solar explains this in more detail.

Will a battery work during a power cut?

Only if it is installed with backup or emergency power capability. Many systems switch off during a grid outage for safety unless they are wired for backup. Ask about this at survey if it matters to you.

Does battery storage need planning permission?

Many home battery installations do not, but listed buildings and some conservation areas have extra rules. Your installer can advise, and you can confirm with your local council if you are unsure.

Is finance available?

Loans available, subject to status. Ask when you request a quote, and the options can be explained alongside your written quote.

Do you cover my area?

We work with installation partners across Scotland, including rural and island areas. Coverage for your address is confirmed when you request a quote.
