Can You Have Battery Storage Without Solar Panels?

Last updated October 2026

You do not need solar panels to benefit from a home battery. A standalone battery can charge from the grid when electricity is cheaper and power your home when it is more expensive. Here is how that works in Scotland, who it tends to suit and what to think about before you get a quote.

How does a battery work without solar panels?

A standalone battery charges from the grid, usually overnight or during a cheaper period on a time-of-use tariff, then supplies your home during more expensive hours. You are shifting when you buy electricity. It does not generate energy, so the benefit depends on the gap between your cheap and peak rates.

The battery connects to your home’s electrics through its own inverter, usually near your consumer unit. Its control system decides when to charge and discharge, and most can follow a schedule or link directly to a supported tariff.

Who is battery storage without solar best suited to?

It tends to suit homes that use a lot of electricity in the evening, households on or willing to switch to a time-of-use tariff, and properties where solar is not practical. It is less useful if your electricity use is low and spread evenly through the day.

  • Homes with electric heating or an electric vehicle
  • Roofs that face north or are heavily shaded
  • Listed buildings or conservation areas where panels are restricted
  • Flats and properties without a suitable roof
  • Households planning to add solar panels later

Do I need a smart meter for a standalone battery?

In practice, yes. Time-of-use tariffs need a smart meter that records when you use electricity, usually in half-hour periods. Without one, you cannot benefit from cheaper off-peak prices, which is the main reason for fitting a battery without solar. Your energy supplier can usually arrange a smart meter.

Some older Scottish homes are still on legacy multi-rate meter arrangements such as Economy 7. If that applies to you, mention it when you request a quote so the right tariff options can be discussed.

Is a standalone battery worth it in Scotland?

It can be, but it depends on your tariff and usage rather than the weather. Because a standalone battery does not rely on sunshine, short Scottish winter days make no difference to it. The key questions are how much you use at peak times and the gap between cheap and peak rates.

We will not quote a savings figure without looking at your actual usage. When you request a quote, your MCS-certified installation partner can look at your bills or smart meter data and explain what to expect.

Can I add solar panels later?

Yes. Many people start with a battery and add solar later. If that is your plan, say so at survey: choosing a hybrid inverter or a battery that works well alongside future solar panels can avoid paying for extra equipment later. Planning ahead usually keeps the overall cost down.

Battery storage installed on its own currently qualifies for 0% VAT in Great Britain until 31 March 2027, so you do not need solar panels to benefit from the relief.

Frequently asked questions

Can a battery keep my power on during a power cut?

Only if it is installed with a backup or emergency power feature. Many batteries switch off during a grid outage for safety unless backup wiring is fitted. If this matters to you, ask about it at survey.

Where does a standalone battery go?

Common locations are a garage, utility room, external wall or loft, depending on the manufacturer’s guidance. Your installer will check ventilation, temperature, access and the cable route to your consumer unit.

Do I need permission from my network operator?

Your installer notifies your local network operator: SSEN in the north of Scotland or SP Energy Networks in central and southern Scotland. Larger systems may need approval before installation.

Will a battery work on my current tariff?

A battery works on any tariff, but its value comes from charging cheaply and using that energy later. On a single flat rate there is little price difference to use, so most people switch to a time-of-use tariff.

Does 0% VAT apply without solar?

Yes. Battery storage installed on its own in Great Britain currently qualifies for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. It is applied on your installer’s invoice.
